Building a precision rifle from the ground up lets you tailor every aspect to your needs. Here are the components I recommend.
The Action #
- Impact Precision – The 737R is the most popular action in PRS, used by more top 100 shooters than any other action. Features a 75 or 90-degree bolt throw, integral recoil lug and rail, and mini M16 extractors. The NBK is their lightweight hunting variant based on the 737R platform.
- Defiance Machine – The Deviant is their flagship competition action, while the anTi X is their ultralight option weighing just 23 oz with guaranteed headspace if you’re looking to work with prefit barrels.
- Lone Peak Arms – Another premium quality manufacturer. There are of course many others.
The Barrel #
- Bartlein Barrels – The gold standard in precision rifle barrels. Single-point cut-rifled barrels known for match-winning accuracy. These barrels have set more records than perhaps any other manufacturer. Wait times are real, but performance is unmatched.
- Proof Research – Industry leader in both stainless steel and carbon fiber barrels. Their steel barrels are made in-house with the same commitment to quality as their carbon offerings, using single-point cut rifling and careful stress relief. Their carbon fiber wrapped barrels are the best on the market—up to 64% lighter than steel while maintaining match-grade accuracy.
The Trigger #
- TriggerTech – Honestly, you just have to feel it to believe it. Get a Diamond for competition, the Primary or Special for anything else.
The Stock #
- The MDT ACC Premiere/Elite – MDT has absolutely crushed it the last several years. The ACC Elite is the most advanced competition chassis available today, and the Premiere gets you basically all the way there for a few hundred less.
- The MDT HNT-26 – Purpose-built lightweight hunting chassis at 26 ounces. Maintains modern features like ARCA compatibility while keeping your rifle nimble for backcountry use.
- Manners Composite Stocks – For shooters who prefer a traditional stock over a chassis system, Manners is the benchmark.
